Action Learning

The Process of Action Learning combines practical action with critical reflection to develop solutions while simultaneously enhancing participants’ skills, knowledge, and leadership abilities.

Key elements of Action Learning typically include:

  1. A real problem – The issue addressed must be urgent and important.
  2. A diverse group – Team members bring different perspectives.
  3. Taking action – The group implements solutions rather than just discussing ideas.
  4. Reflective learning – Participants regularly reflect on what they are learning from the experience.
  5. Supportive questioning – Members challenge assumptions and ask questions to deepen understanding.

Action Learning is learning by doing, with reflection, aimed at solving problems and developing people at the same time.

Viewing Action Learning through the lens of head and heart gives a deeper understanding of both the cognitive and emotional dimensions of the process:

Head (Cognitive/Thinking Side)

  • Focuses on analysis, problem-solving, and learning.
  • Involves critical thinking: understanding the problem, generating solutions, evaluating options.
  • Encourages reflection on lessons learned and knowledge gained.
  • Ensures that actions are strategically sound and evidence-based.

Heart (Emotional/Relational Side)

  • Focuses on relationships, empathy, and values.
  • Encourages trust, openness, and vulnerability in the team.
  • Supports emotional intelligence, helping participants understand their own reactions and those of others.
  • Fosters motivation and commitment, because people feel connected to the purpose and to each other.
  • Integration of Head and Heart

Action Learning isn’t just about solving a problem (head) - it’s about learning together, growing together, and understanding the human side of work (heart).

Decisions and reflections are more holistic, combining logic with compassion, strategy with empathy.

In essence: head drives the solutions, heart drives the engagement and learning.
